The Modern World in Context: At Home, Online, and Beyond Time I is a two-year course designed for students of the University of the Third Age. In the 2025/2026 academic year, it will offer a total of 20 lectures and practical workshops. Participants will learn about current topics in everyday life, from intergenerational differences, digital technologies, advertising, travel, and sustainability to cultural heritage. The course connects social topics with personal experiences and offers inspiration for an active and open approach to the contemporary world.

1. Life across generations: Values, technology, communication
October 3, 2025 – Generations under the microscope: Different behaviors of generations X, Y, and Z
The lecture will highlight the differences in values, lifestyle, and economic behavior of the three generations. We will focus on the influence of technology, media, and changes in the labor market. You will understand why different generations see the world differently.
October 10, 2025 – The economy under the supervision of technology: Changing habits of individual generations
The lecture will focus in more detail on how digital technology influences the economic decisions of individual generations. It will show how smart systems guide them in shopping and investing through personalization and data processing. We will also touch on ethical issues and the need to regulate this new type of power.
October 17, 2025 – Communication not only with grandchildren: How to understand Generation Z
You will learn how the youngest generation thinks and communicates. You will find out why intergenerational misunderstandings arise and how to overcome them. Practical tips will help you when talking to younger generations.
2. The world on the move: From the history of tourism to Generation Z
October 24, 2025 – Traveling through time: The history that shapes us
You will learn how tourism has evolved from the past to the present. We will discuss the problems of today's tourism, including the overcrowding of certain places. You will learn how to travel responsibly.
October 31, 2025 – Around the world with Generation Z: Anežka Pecháčková's captivating travel experiences
How do young people travel today, why, and where? We will focus on their motivation, work, volunteering, and exploring the world. The lecture will also introduce new trends in travel with an emphasis on helping others.
3. Behind the scenes of advertising: How companies think about customers
November 7, 2025 – Consumer protection: Shopping not only on the internet
You will learn how laws protect us when shopping and how to defend ourselves against unfair practices by merchants. We will focus on common tricks in advertising and on the internet. Practical advice will help you shop more safely and with greater clarity.
November 14, 2025 – Marketing pigeonholing: Why companies offer you exactly what you (don't) want
You will learn how companies divide customers according to their interests and purchasing behavior. We will show you how this makes advertisements "fit" you and why. You will find out which marketing group you belong to.
November 21, 2025 – Advertising yesterday and today: What works on us and why
We will look at the evolution of advertising from printed flyers to social media. You will find out how companies think about what attracts and appeals to customers today. And also how to navigate this world as an ordinary consumer.
4. Christmas inspiration: Ideas, creativity, and the magic of the moment
November 28, 2025 – Christmas crafts with a story: Traditions and messages of the holiday season
We will reflect on the deeper meaning of Christmas, its origins, and its spiritual dimension. We will create Christmas wreaths together and reflect on the values that these holidays represent. Christmas as a time of peace, connection, and quiet reflection.
December 5, 2025 – Christmas atmosphere: How to capture it with your cell phone and edit it like a pro
You will learn how to photograph Christmas details and moods using your mobile phone. You will get tips on how to easily edit your photos to make them stand out. A practical workshop for those who want to have beautiful memories not only in their minds but also in their galleries.
5. How to protect what we have: Today's environmental challenges
February 20, 2026 – When nature speaks: Changes in humanity's approach to the planet
This lecture will show how our relationship with nature has changed throughout history. We will focus on the development of environmental thinking towards a sustainable approach. We will also address the question of our role in caring for the planet today.
February 27, 2026 – We Take Too Much, Give Too Little: A Story of People and Oceans
You will learn how overfishing and pollution threaten the world's oceans. We will show the causes and consequences of these problems and their impact on the future. We will present ways to become more responsible towards the marine environment.
March 6, 2026 – What you can't buy legally: Trade that destroys nature and our society
Illegal trade in weapons, people, drugs, and protected species is a threat to nature and society. We will focus on the links to crime, poaching, and environmental impacts. We will show why it is important not to ignore this problem.
6. A healthy brain, balanced relationships
March 13, 2026 – Exercise your memory: A practical workshop for every day
You will try out simple techniques for remembering names, numbers, and everyday tasks better. You will learn how memory works and how to train it in everyday life. The workshop is part of National Memory Training Week.
March 20, 2026 – Learning together: How to enjoy learning with your grandchildren
The workshop will offer tips on how to enjoy stress-free learning with your grandchildren. You will learn how to support their motivation and bridge the generation gap. Practical advice will help you turn home preparation into a shared experience.
7. Easter moments: Traditional, creative, with deeper meaning
March 27, 2026 – Easter crafts with a story: Traditions and messages of the holiday season
Easter is an opportunity for creativity and reflection. We will make Easter wreaths together and reflect on the cultural and spiritual significance of the holidays and their influence on our civilization. The workshop will offer inspiration on how to perceive Easter as a time of personal and social renewal.
8. Marketing in the new era: Between the screen and responsibility
April 10, 2026 – Advertising in the digital world: What works for us online
Today, advertising takes place on social networks and in interactive content. We will look at how companies reach customers in the digital space and how we can better navigate it. The lecture will also highlight the weaknesses of online communication.
April 17, 2026 – Green Advertising: Real Change or Just Pretty Packaging
We will focus on the phenomenon of "green" advertising and ethical marketing. You will learn how to tell if companies are serious about sustainability. We will show examples of campaigns and ideas for reflection and practical use.
9. In the footsteps of history: Czech monuments and the charm of České Budějovice
April 24, 2026 – Traveling through historical monuments: Gateway to the present
This lecture will offer a look at the development of tourism and architecture in the Czech Republic. You will learn about UNESCO monuments and how to recognize architectural styles. We will show you how historical monuments influence our present.
May 15, 2026 – České Budějovice through the centuries: Guided tour
A walk through the city will bring the history of České Budějovice to life. You will learn about the role of a guide and visit places where history was made. You will find out what this profession entails and whether you would enjoy it.
