Literary canons today? On theory and practice of literary canon.

The course will offer an introduction to contemporary canon theory. Mostly, it will focuse on the analysis of different types of canons and canonization strategies, with an emphasis on school canons. The basic questions of the course are: how is a canon formed? What purpose does a canon serve? How many canons can there be and how do they relate to each other? These questions will be answered with examples from Czech and world literature.

The course is offered as part of the project NPO - Transformation USB, reg. no. - NPO_JČU_MSMT - 16608/2022.

1. Contemporary canon theory. What is a classic or tradition? How does we define the canon of world/western literature? What does the "opening" of the canon mean?
2. The formation of the national literary canon. Who belongs to this canon and who is or has been excluded? National and Czech writer - is there any difference? 
3. The canon in a foreign context. Czech literature in the world - world literature in Czechia
4. Stories of canonization: Mácha, Němcová, Hašek, Kundera
5. Discussion - the canon from the teachers' point of view
