More information:

When History Comes in Handy

Munich 1938 as an argument for why Ukraine must defend itself. August 1968 as a parallel to the Russian invasion of 2022. Vladimir Putin as a new Hitler, and the war in Ukraine as another 1938. Donald Trump cast at different times as Hitler, Chamberlain, Reagan, or even a new Roosevelt. In public discourse, the past is constantly invoked to explain the present—and very often to simplify it, dramatise it, or use it for overt political manipulation. Přepište dějiny will examine specific historical parallels encountered today in politicians’ speeches, the media, and social networks, and explore why some appear so persuasive even though they do not stand up well to closer scrutiny. We will also consider how references to Nazism and communism operate, why historical figures so readily become convenient labels, and how complex history is turned into a simple argument in contemporary political disputes. This live podcast featuring Michal Stehlík and Martin Groman will last approximately one hour and will focus not only on the past, but above all on what we do with the past today. The recording will be followed by a discussion with the audience and an opportunity for questions.
